Of course you should have no problems reading the 'User Friendly Manuals'
website!
But if you do have any kind of problems, please ...
... send me an e-mail
with the following information:
- Which browser you are using
(e.g., Lynx, Netscape 2.02, ...). It is very important that you state the
version of your browser, too, if you know it.
- Which system you are using
(Windows 3.1/3.11/95, OS/2, UNIX, Mac, ???, etc.).
- Where the problem is: Which
page (filename or title), and where on the page.
- What the problem is.
... or just
fill in the following form:
Example:
Name: Pam Brown
E-mail: pam@brownmail.com
System and Browser: Windows Me, Netscape 6.0.
Which part ...: the new tip of the month page.
Description: The link to last month tip doesn't work!
I will then try to solve the
problem and send you an e-mail when it is (hopefully) fixed. But, please,
be patient - it may take some time to solve the problem, and I may be away
for other business for some days.
List of standard homepage
problems and excuses:
- Links fails to work:
- Sometimes a link fails even
if it is correctly written in the document. The reason is too long time to
contact the host and start downloading the file. Please try again. But if
you can access other links in my website, you have most likely found
an error. The most common reason is that I write the web-pages in Netscape
Gold, and it sometimes changes the link address to the address on my harddisk.
I try to be careful and check them out, but I haven't found the full pattern
yet. Please tell me if you discover such links.
- This website is designed
on a PC running Windows 95, but the server is running UNIX. Win 95 is not
case sensitive on filenames, UNIX is. Win 95 tends to save the files writing
the filenames with a capital 1st letter, and may change the case automatically.
For uniformity, all filenames in this homepage are written in lowercase letters,
and so should all links be!
- Problems with graphics,
frames and/or tables:
- Web browsers are very different.
I try to do my best to make it possible to get the information whether you
are using good old faithful Lynx, the latest browsers from e.g., Netscape
or Microsoft, or any other browser. Therefore I try to include alternative
texts in case you can't see the graphics. I also try to make the graphics
as small and universal as possible. I normally don't use tables, because
with many browsers, it becomes a mess. If I use them, I try to make sure
it's readable in a sensible way with non-table browsers, too. I use frames,
but only as an extra service for those of you who can see them. The rest
of you won't be harmed!
- The animated image on
the homepage don't animate: The image on top of the homepage is an animated
GIF. The animation can be seen as animated with (to my knowledge) Netscape
2.01+ and MS Explorer 2.01+ , only. With most other or older graphic browsers
(e.g. Netscape 1.0) you will see the first image, only. But AOL's and SUN's
HotJava browser displays the last image only. You don't miss anything of
importance if you can't see this 8k, 6-image animation (or the image at all)
- it's only there to make life less boring! With MS Internet Explorer 3.0,
it will not start to animate before the last graphic - the counter - is loaded,
- and sometimes counter.com is a little slow!
- Strange characters:
- Some browsers can't read all
the tags Netscape and Microsoft invent, and then instead of the intended
function, you will see something like ' ' the most peculiar places
in the text. I frequently clean my webpages, and mid November '96, I cleaned
all my pages. But they will come again, thanks to Netscape Gold!
- Missing spaces:
- In September 2001, I switched
to Netscape 6.0 Composer for editing my webpages. It had a bug, which in
some cases automatically here and there removed the space between some words.
I have tried to read through all pages which were changed in that period,
but there may still be a few of these errors left. Please let me know if
you find one of these errors by filling in the form
above! (I now use Netscape 6.2 Composer, where this bug is repaired.)
- I am a male human being
, so I might fail sometimes. Please forgive me and help me to correct my
errors by telling me about them.
Thank you in advance for your
kind understanding and cooperation.
